Balakrishna

 

Balakrishna

     Krishna temple at Vijayanagar Hampi ruins, Bellary District. About 15th Century AD.

     The image of Balakrishna seated with left leg on the seat and the right leg hanging down. Unfortunately both the hands are broken and missing except the fingers of the left hand. The hair is arranged in a knot over the head and the kundalas are shaped like small sankhas. The forehead bears the sandal paste mark which is a characteristic mark of this period. It is the war trophy of king Krishna Deva Raya.

     Mullangudi, Thanjavur District. About 15th Century AD.

    Sarasvati, goddess of learning shown here as standing. She holds akshamala and lotus in two of her hands and abhaya and varada in the other two. She wears makarakundalas in her ears and has jatamakuta.

Subrahmanya

 

Subrahmanya

     Uttarakosamangai, Ramanathapuram District. About 17th Century AD.

     Subrahmanya standing with four hands, two of which hold Sakti and Vajra. The other two are in the abhaya and varada attitude. His head is adorned with a kiritamakuta and his ears wear makarakundalas. The peacock, his vehicle is shown behind him holding a snake in its beak with its face to the right of Subrahmanya.
