REFURBISHED COINS GALLERY

The Refurbished Coins Gallery with Air-condition facility was declared open by
Dr. V. Irai Anbu, I.A.S., Secretary to Government, Tourism and Culture Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, in the presence of Dr. T.S. Sridhar, I.A.S., Principal Secretary and Commissioner of Museums on 18th May 2009, synchronizing with the International Museum Day Celebrations, 2009.
Coins of various kingdoms issued on several occasions - from Punch-marked to present day coins depicting 2,500 years of Indian history - are in display at the Refurbished Coins Gallery. The Coins Gallery showcases interesting features like Dynastical Coins, Swedish Plate Money, Coin Counting Tray and Pre-Independence and Post-Independence Paper Currencies. A 1000 Rupees Note depicting Thanjavur Big Temple and a commemorative 1 Rupee Coin with Thiruvalluvar motif are the highlights of the Gallery.
INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY, 2009
“KNOW YOUR MUSEUM”
Chennai Government Museum is the second largest multi-purpose museum in India. It has eleven sections consisting of Art, Archaeology, Anthropology, Zoology, Numismatics, Botany, Geology, Children's Museum. Besides there are three sections viz: Chemical Conservation Laboratory, Education and Design and Display to improve the galleries. Every section is headed by a Curator.
International Museum Day was celebrated on 18th May 2009 at the Centenary Exhibition Hall in the Government Museum, Egmore, Chennai.

Dr. V. Irai Anbu, I.A.S., Secretary to Government, Tourism and Culture Department, Government of Tamil Nadu inaugurated the "Know Your Museum Programme" for students to kindle awareness and acquire knowledge about the museum artefacts.

Dr. T.S. Sridhar, I.A.S., Principal Secretary and Commissioner of Museums presided over the function and addressed the gathering on the importance of knowing the museum.

As part of the International Museum Day Celebrations Dr. V. Irai Anbu, I.A.S., Secretary to Government, Tourism and Culture Department, Government of Tamil Nadu planted a sapling in the Museum premises.
|
This programme was organised by Thiru. G. Kalathy, Curator, Education Section. Curators of all the sections described the intricacies of their section to the students through power point presentations and gallery visits. 35 students in the age group of 13 to 16 years have participated in the programme. Participants interacted with Curators to clarify their doubts.

PAINTING EXHIBITION ON "GLOBAL WARMING"
Government Museum, Chennai and Government College of Fine Arts & Crafts, Chennai have jointly organized a "Painting Exhibition" on Global Warming by Eminent Artists of India. It was held on 25th May 2009 at 11.00 am at the Centenary Exhibition
Hall, Government Museum, Chennai. Dr. T.S. Sridhar, I.A.S., Principal Secretary /Commissioner of Museums, Chennai presided over the function. Thiru Rm. Palaniappan, Regional Secretary, Lalit Kala Akademi, Chennai inaugurated the function. The exhibition displayed thirteen paintings by eleven Artists. The theme of the exhibition is to create awareness, through the paintings, among the public about environmental degradation due to Global Warming. The exhibition was held between 25.5.2009 and 29.5.2009.
