Buddhist Sculptures

Head of a Bodhisattva (Period IV)

Head of a Bodhisattva (Period IV)

Head of the Bodhisattva with a turban having a triangle in the centre suggesting the votive stupa. Slightly parted lips and bulging nose are the characteristic marks of the period.

Fragment (Period II)

The sculpture represents the story of the conversion of the Jatilas.

The Jatilas were opponents of the Buddha. Their leader, Kassapa, thought that he was holier than the Buddha. But the Jatilas were finally made to surrender to the Buddha by his flood miracle. The Buddha caused an unprecedented flood to occur and floated on it to the surprise of all including the Jatilas who at once bowed to him.

Here, the Jatilas are shown standing with their hands joined above their heads in adoration after the miracle of showers, which is indicated by the many close parallel lines above.
