One-month "Summer Workshop on Arts and Crafts" for students - Information for circulation.

The Government Museum, Chennai is the largest and oldest of the State museums in India, established in the year 1851. This multi-purpose museum comprising number of galleries pertaining to Archaeology, Anthropology, Numismatics, Cotemporary Art, Geology, Botany, Zoology and a Children’s Museum.

The Children’s Museum of Government Museum, Chennai is being in its yeomen service since its inception on 11th April 1988, in promoting scientific temper and sprit of inquiry among the visiting children. In this year it is entering its 21st year of service. In order to celebrate this event more suitable, it has been proposed to conduct a month long ‘Summer Workshop on Arts and Crafts’ from 14th April 2008 to 11th May 2008 with full co-ordination of all the sections of Government Museum, Chennai.

  • In order to kindle the hidden creative ability among the students and to promote the sprit of inquiry a month long Summer Workshop on Arts and Crafts, comprising of Training programmes conducted by experts on various themes along with interactive lectures in the appropriate topic by eminent scholars are designed for the benefit of students of age group of 14 to 16. In this programme 80 students will be admitted every week as a batch. Consecutively a total of 4 batches will get trained in this month long summer workshop. Enrolment of willing students will be done on the first come first served basis. There is no course fee for this workshop but required materials have to be brought by the participants.

    "The Chemical Conservation Section and Research Laboratory", Government Museum, Chennai is conducting the 33rd Refresher Course on Care of Museum objects from 1st to 30th June 2007. Those who are interested may download the application and send it to the Government Museum, Chennai as mentioned in the Prospectus.


    Dr. Sitharam Gurumurthi, I.A.S., Principal Commissioner of Archaeology took over full additional charge as Commissioner of Museums on 26.2.2007 Forenoon from Dr.R.Kannan, Ph.D., I.A.S., Special Commissioner & Commissioner of Museums, Government Museum, Chennai, as he is deputed to Government of India and posted as Chief Vigilance Officer, Madras Fertilizers Limited, Chennai.


    Endowment Lecture

    International Women's Association (IWA), Chennai Chapter instituted an Endowment in the Government Museum, Chennai in the Year 1997. The first lecture was organised in the year 1998. In this series an Endowment Lecture was organised on 26th February 2007 at 11.30 AM on 'Holistic Approach to Dating in Ancient History - Especially Indian History' at the Museum Theatre, Government Museum, Chennai.

    Thiru M. Mohan, Curator, Botany Section welcomed the gathering. Mrs.Anuradha M Uberoi, Chairperson, History Culture & Tour, IWA introduced the Speaker. Dr. R. Kannan, Ph.D., I.A.S. Ms.Amulya Rao, Co-president, IWA, Ms. Anitha Kapoor, Co-activity Chairperson and Ms. Seema Bhargava, President of the IWA were on the dais with the speaker of the day.

    Dr. R. Kannan, Ph.D., I.A.S., who was the Special Commissioner and Commissioner of Museum, Government Museum, Chennai delivered the lecture just after joining in his new assignment as Chief Vigilance Officer, Madras Fertilisers Limited, Chennai. He spoke on the subject of holistic dating combining the finds of archaeology, numismatics, etc., highlighting various dating methods like Carbon dating, T.L. dating, etc., with a PowerPoint presentation.

    The presentation was well received by the gathering including the members of the International Women's Association, Curators and staff of Government Museum, Chennai.
